In this book he described the genesis and spreading of Marxist thought, beginning with its general historical context and ending with an overview of the spreading of Marxism and its impact on social sciences and political activity of workersˈorganizations. He thus wanted to establish, in a time when the validity of Marxist ideas was generally questioned, the precise role of Marxˈs contribution and its very particular situation in the social sciences. This notebook was used as a basis for education and discussion by several generations of militants and was an important element for the spreading of a critical and open Marxism among the sections of the Fourth International. This fall, the publishing house “M éditeur”, in a joint effort with the IIRE in Amsterdam, just edited again this contemporaneous classic. It is completed by an introduction by Richard Poulin, Professor in Social Sciences in Ottawa University, which provides an interesting comment upon the Marxist critique of academic knowledge, its fragmentation and its claim to be objective and neutral. The introduction also includes a biographical presentation of Ernest Mandel and a comment upon the relevance of his contribution in the current context of global crisis.
